SESB is incapable: Chamber

Posted by Save Sandakan On July - 11 - 2009

Kota Kinabalu: The Sandakan Chinese Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) has urged the State Government to seriously consider acquiring an 80 per cent stake in Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and take over the management of Sabah’s power supply.

"It is proven that TNB is incapable of looking after the welfare and interests of the people in Sabah. It is not right for TNB to make billions of ringgit yearly while forgetting about its social duty and commitment," said Secretary General, Stephen Wong Tien Fatt.

He said his statement was based on a Maybank investment analyst that TNB is optimistic that it would achieve RM10 billion profit for the third quarter of this year. TNB made RM4.7 billion in 2007 and RM3.02 billion in 2008.

"The residents of Sabah, particularly Sandakan, have been seriously affected by the threats of constant power cuts for at least a decade. The only body we could turn to is SESB, which claimed to be the problem solver in this matter.

"Yet SESB has repeatedly proved its failure and incompetence in solving the problem of power shortage in Sabah all this while," he said in a statement here Tuesday.

Wong said that three months ago SESB had given its assurance that the load shedding exercise was due to the breakdowns of the power generators in Tenom, Sepanggar Bay and Labuan and that these would be repaired and up and running by June this year.

"It is (already) July and the power supply has not only failed to show any improvements but has worsened with accelerated constant power cuts at an average of at least once per day in Sandakan itself.

"SESB has again given exactly the same reason it gave three months ago," he said.

Wong said Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui had on May 16 stated that 20 units of 1Mw mobile generators had been provided under an emergency allocation by the Prime Minister to remedy the situation in Sabah.

However, power supply in Sandakan is worsening and the load shedding did no better to aid the residents, he said, adding the schedule for this exercise was also not provided to them.

"All we can expect is a power cut at anytime of the day without warning.

"SESB owes it to the residents of Sabah to solve this problem, which has long existed but it has failed grossly É as such, something has to be done by our State Government to safeguard and ensure the basic right of our Sabahans," he said.

Wong said it was also regrettable that SESB had increased the consumers’ deposits because the residents of Sabah could not see the justification for it.

"When it is a fact that theft in power by illegal individuals has also been a factor in contributing to the problem of power shortage in Sabah, SESB instead tries to inflict a collateral attack on the residents of Sabah by increasing the deposit," he said.

At the same time, Wong said SCCC also called on the government to consider replacing TNB Chairman, Tan Sri Leo Moggie and his management team with more suitable people who are driven to find genuine solutions for the problem faced by the people of Sabah.

We should not look this matter as unsolved problem by SESB. We should have a generation station that can give us power or we will suffer the same problem forever. I personally agree with the proposal of building coal power plant in Sandakan with several conditions. First, the site must be 5KM radius away population with trees (not a palm tree) covering the area. SESB should monitor a disposed waste water not in the level of harming the environment. SESB should using a clean technology in generating power. We as a Sandakan people should monitor SESB in protecting our environment by forming an environment protection body/society.
If the coal fired plant come into realise in Sandakan, I hope have a better future not just in our quality of living but also in term of economy factor.
    GO FOR CLEAN POWER

    roni,

    unfortunately, u r TOO NAIVE.

tell me HOW u r going to monitor what SESB is doing – to begin with, YOU DONT EVEN KNOW WHY we r suffering blackouts day-in-day-out!! they tell u it’s because of ‘power station’ problem, but HOW r u going to check that they r telling the truth???

    grow up…

what makes u think 5km is enough?? CHECK the facts. the ENTIRE PROVINCE in China could be affected by the toxins emitted by coal!! 5km is safe??? u must be kidding me.

there’s NO SUCH THING as ‘clean coal power’. even if there is, SESB is going to build a coal power plant which is made from MADE IN CHINA technology and generators. HOW CLEAN can that be??

let me put it this way: SESB tells u they GUARANTEE it’s clean. now, they offer to build u a house FOR FREE 5.5km away from that power plant for your entire family. DO YOU WANT TO STAY THERE????

1 fallacy that SESB wants u to believe is that if u want regular power supply IN SANDAKAN, then u must build a coal power plant IN SANDAKAN.

    sounds logical? makes sense?

fine. then, please explain HOW COME WEST MALAYSIA CAN ENJOY POWER SUPPLY FROM BAKUN, SARAWAK, ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SOUTH CHINA SEA??

u DONT need to have a coal power plant in Sandakan to have regular power supply!! as a matter of fact, a lot of power we get in the east coast (Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau) we get FROM THE WEST-EAST GRID, which transmitts power FROM THE WEST COAST.

YOU DONT NEED A COAL POWER PLANT IN YOUR BACKYARD TO HAVE REGULAR POWER SUPPLY, HELLO?!?!??

    i cant belive u bought SESB’s propaganda…

i suggest u READ the articles posted in this blog my friend. the wealth and wellbeing of our future generations DEPEND ON people like u having a critical mind n dont get fooled…

can sandakan count on YOU, my friend??

    i meant to say ‘health’…

all we need is to have regular power supply by taking some of the natural gas produced in the west coast of Sabah, or hydro power from Bakun, Sarawak, to be transmitted through GRID to the east coast.

can it be done? it’s no rocket science – just ask TNB about the UNDERSEA/SUBMARINE cable, which is 675km long connecting Sarawak and Johor. for grid on land, we r already using 1 such grid connecting west coast of sabah to east coast. we just need to construct another 1 if need be.

    WHEN THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY.

if SESB tells us that it’s TOOOOOOOO DIFFICULT to even construct another GRID from west to east (even though they have ALREADY constructed 1 since 2007), then that’s NOT bcos they dont have the technology or funds.

that’s bcos they have already DECIDED to go for coal, and NOTHING ELSE.

bcos the contract has already been signed!!! so, if they cancel the coal power plant, i guess they most probably have to PAY COMPENSATION…

    http://www.savesabah.com/blog/power-matters-in-sabah-hardly-empowering-by-frustrated-sabahan/

why would SESB/TNB probably have to pay compensation?? well, that’s most probably bcos SESB and TNB r TOO ARROGANT to assume that they’ll definitely be allowed to build WHATEVER plant they want in Sabah, even without asking the Sabah Government first. (SESB/TNB has so far not denied/commented on this story we’ve posted)

if that’s the case, THEY DESERVE IT. they shouldnt force Sabah people to accept/pay for their apparent arrogance…
